ICDAR2011 Doctoral Consortium

The leaderships of IAPR TC-10 (“Graphics Recognition”) and TC-11 (“Reading Systems”) have organized a Doctoral Consortium in conjunction with ICDAR 2011. The goal of the Doctoral Consortium is to create an opportunity for Ph.D. students to test their research ideas, present their current progress and future plans, and receive constructive criticism and insights related to their future work and career perspectives. A mentor (a senior researcher who is active in the field) has been assigned to each student to provide individual feedback. In addition, students will have the opportunity to present an overview of their research plan during a special poster session. A Best Poster Presentation Award will be given at the end of the day.

Through an open call for participation which has already concluded, a total of 21 Ph.D. students will be participating in the first-ever ICDAR Doctoral Consortium. Thanks to a generous sponsorship provided by Raytheon BBN Technologies, there is no registration charge for the Ph.D. students who have been selected or their assigned mentors to attend the Doctoral Consortium. The event will take place the day before the main ICDAR conference, on the afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 18. The schedule is as follows:

1:40 pm – 2:10 pm: Welcome and short talk: “Advice for a Successful Ph.D. Experience”

2:10 pm – 3:10 pm: Brief oral introductions to student research plans

3:10 pm – 3:25 pm: Coffee break

3:25 pm – 5:25 pm: Student poster session with discussion and feedback

5:25 pm – 5:40 pm: Concluding remarks and Best Poster Presentation Award presentation

A Doctoral Consortium overview booklet will be made available at the event containing a summary of each student's research activities along with his/her resume.

Registration

The ICDAR Doctoral Consortium is intended to be an event for Ph.D. students and their assigned mentors. A small number of additional outside participants will be permitted by paying the appropriate registration fee listed below. Please understand that it may be necessary for us to close the registration for outside participants without notice so that we can guarantee a first-rate experience for the students who have been accepted into the Doctoral Consortium. For this reason, pre-registration by sending email to Dr. Xinwen Hou (xwhou@nlpr.ia.ac.cn) is strongly encouraged. Payment for registrations should be made on-site – it is not possible to pay for the Doctoral Consortium using the online registration system.

$50: Advisors of PhD students who are not also serving as Doctoral Consortium mentors,

$50: Ph.D. students who did not apply to the Doctoral Consortium but still would like to attend (note: these students may attend but will not be allowed to present their own work)

$100: Other full-time faculty members

$200: All other attendees (e.g., company representatives)

Any additional registration fees collected beyond those needed to pay for the expenses for the event will be used to fund future ICDAR Doctoral Consortium activities.

Ph.D. students who have been accepted into the Doctoral Consortium and their assigned mentors do not have to register for the Doctoral Consortium. There is no charge for you to attend, and we already have the necessary information in the system.
