ICFHR 2020 Goes Virtual

The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed the world and the way people interact. Unfortunately, this also affects the organization of scientific exchange during conferences. Therefore, the ICFHR 2020 Organizing Team has decided to make ICFHR 2020 a fully virtual event. Thus we can ensure the safety of all participants and the possibility of broad international participation. Additionally, we will be able to make reliable plans for this important conference of the Document Analysis community. The details of the presentation and interaction formats of the virtual ICFHR will be worked out in the coming weeks. Please look for the respective announcements on the ICFHR 2020 website and in this newsletter.

The conference registration is open, with early bird registration until July 31, 2020.

Kannada OCR benchmarking dataset

Link to the dataset: https://github.com/MILE-IISc/Kannada-OCR-test-images-with-ground-truth

This Kannada OCR benchmarking dataset contains 250 images, carefully chosen to have various kinds of recognition challenges. Some of the pages have italics and bold characters. Some of them have Halegannada poems and text; others are letterpress-printed pages, where the vowel modifiers appear as separate symbols and do not touch the consonants they go with. Some pages have interspersed English words; still others have tables with a lot of numeric data. In addition, there are old pages containing either a lot of broken characters or many words with two or more characters merged into a single connected component.

More information together with OCR results can be found in H.R. Shiva Kumar and A.G. Ramakrishnan, “Lipi Gnani: A Versatile OCR for Documents in Any Language Printed in Kannada Script”, ACM Trans. TALLIP, Vol. 19, No. 4, 2020. This article is available open access until end of June 2020: https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3387632
