I think it is a good idea to let the arguments speak for themselves, so I continue the anonymous format, as before. Feedback ======== Reaction #8 A well-known member (founding father) states: > I agree that we must include on-line research. "Reading Systems" does > give plenty of scope for what we need to do. "Theory and Applications" > seems to me all-inclusive and therefore redundant, but it can't hurt. Reaction #9 (Another of the founding fathers): > I like the reaction #7 "Reading Systems" (possibly > with the theory/application qualifier). Reaction #10 > "TC-11: Reading Systems: Theory & Applications", captures > my own thoughts very well. Reaction #11 (a distinguished member of both TC-10 and TC-11) > (w.r.t.) "TC-11: Document Analysis and Recognition" > > ICDAR and IJDAR cover topics relevant to TC10 and 11. > Document analysis and recognition covers both text processing and > drawing (graphics) recognition. > Therefore, I would advise against this title for TC11. > ... > "TC-11: Theory and Applications of (Machine) Reading Systems" > I like this title and the rationale for the title. Solution ======== After considering the last batch of reactions concerning the title, of TC-11, I have composed the final proposal on the following page: http://hwr.nici.kun.nl/iapr/tc-11/title.html The solution contains the following elements: - "TC-11: Reading Systems" is the title - the text of the abstract describing TC-11's research area underlines both "Theory" and "Applications", - an accentuation of the balance between theory and application is graphically depicted by the suggested logo for TC-11. The vertical axis represents the Reading System, the horizontal axis represents Theory versus Praxis. Argumentation ============= The new title is broad enough to capture all areas, but yet at the same time it does not conflict with other Technical Committees. Since the community has displayed a clear interest in balancing theory and application, an explicit addition of "Theory" to the title may be overdone, especially considering the fact that the titles of the other Technical Committees do not contain a similar qualifier. The concept of "Reading Systems" is already of a more abstract nature than the previous title, which creates space for fundamental perspectives on the work done in TC-11. Conclusion ========== I think we have arrive a stable state. Therefore, I will prepare an adapted version of a formal letter to Prof. Kasturi, the Chairman of the Technical Committees, to change the title into: "TC-11: Reading Systems" Thank you all very much for your support and patience in this matter. I am sure it is a good investment in the future of TC-11. Best regards, Lambert Schomaker
