With this edition I would like to draw your attention to the call for submitting proposals for hosting ICFHR 2016, one of the major events organized by the TC-11 community. As you may know, the decision about bids for hosting ICFHR 2016 will be taken by a vote of the attendants of ICFHR 2012 during a special session. Therefore, if you are interested in organizing ICFHR in four years from now, please submit your proposal and prepare a nice presentation for convincing the TC-11 community gathering in Bari in September. Furthermore, you will find below a Call for Participation for a workshop on "Historical Documents in the Digital Age" that will be held at the University of Rouen in October. Looking forward to meeting you in Bari! Gernot A. In keeping with the practice of the community, proposals are now being solicited for hosting ICFHR 2016, the 15th International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition. ICFHR is the premier event for identifying, encouraging, and exchanging ideas in handwriting recognition research, as well as for promoting novel applications at the frontiers of this important field. The single-track conference brings together leading researchers and practitioners in on-line and off-line handwriting recognition. Formerly known as IWFHR, past meetings have been held around the world in Montreal, Chateau de Bonas, Taipei, Colchester, Taejon, Amsterdam, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Tokyo, La Baule, and Kolkata. The 14th International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition, ICFHR 2014, is scheduled to be held in Crete, Greece. Individuals and groups who are interested in handwriting recognition research are invited to submit proposals for organizing and hosting ICFHR 2016. Because the next two conferences will be held at locations in Europe, proposals from Asia and the Americas are strongly encouraged. Proposals should be sent to: Dan Lopresti, TC-11 Chair, lopresti@cse.lehigh.edu Koichi Kise, TC-11 Vice Chair, kise@cs.osakafu-u.ac.jp The deadline for submitting written proposals is Monday, September 10. Feedback will be provided and selected proposers will be invited to make brief presentations to the community during a special session at ICFHR 2012 in Bari. A vote by the members of the community in attendance will then be taken to determine the winning bid. The special session is scheduled in the main lecture room "Apulia" from 15.00 to 16.00 on September 19. The winning bid will be announced at the conference banquet later that same evening. Questions concerning the proposal process can be addressed to Dan Lopresti and Koichi Kise. ============================================================================ ========== Call for Participation: ========================================= Historical Documents in the Digital Age 25th-26th october 2012 - University of Rouen http://hdda2012.sciencesconf.org/ ******************************************************* **Purpose The aim of the Workshop is to bring together those whose professional work involves the study of historical documents or who have a responsibility for increasing their accessibility, with technologists developing techniques to support the analysis and management of digital documents. The Workshop will encourage a greater understanding of how these two communities can work productively together and how crossing the traditional disciplinary boundaries can create opportunities for supporting better historical research while also increasing the general public 's awareness of their rich cultural heritage. This workshop should be interesting for: * Historians and others interested in sharing their experiences of document analysis with scientists developing computer-based tools to support such activities. * Those who have a responsibility for preserving and managing historical documents and making them available both to specialists using them for research and detailed study, and the general public seeking to benefit from the rich cultural legacy embodied by such documents. * Scientists and engineers developing advanced technologies in areas such as image processing, pattern recognition and digital media engineering relevant to document analysis. The workshop will provide an opportunity for a diverse range of researchers and other professionals, including end users, to share experiences and explore ideas at the crossroads of traditional disciplinary boundaries, otherwise barriers to rapid progress in improving the accessibility of documents which can contribute so fundamentally to an understanding of our cultural heritage. For each session of the workshop, we invited european specialists of the field to share their experience of the domain, as an opening for an open debate with all attendants.
