Pal, Indian Statistical Institute, India S. Srihari, CEDAR, USA Arabic script is of substantial influence for hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Numerous applications in different areas of automated document processing require robust recognition techniques for the analysis of Arabic handwriting. Substantial challenges lie in the high variance in character appearance, the highly idiosyncratic omittance of vowels, common ambiguities in writing, or the omnipresence of touching characters. For robust Arabic handwriting recognition, massive research efforts are demanded. In order to provide a place to meet and discuss current issues related to Arabic handwriting recognition, FAHR 2010 -- the 1st International Workshop on Frontiers in Arabic Handwriting Recognition -- will be held in conjunction with ICPR 2010. It aims at bringing together researchers -- both from academia and industry -- as well as practitioners in the field of Arabic handwriting recognition. Given its unique location within the city of Istanbul, Turkey, at the border between the Arabian and the western world, researchers working in the field are invited to participate in FAHR 2010. ** Topics FAHR2010 seeks original, unpublished contributions, that are not currently under review by another conference or journal, in all areas related to Arabic handwriting recognition, including (but not limited to) the following: - Preprocessing - Script identification - Line segmentation - Word segmentation - Recognition strategies - Feature extraction - Writing models - Language modelling - Systems - Datasets and evaluation - Relation between OCR and handwriting recognition ** Submission Guideline Prospective authors should prepare full papers with a maximum length of six pages (double column, IEEE style, PDF). Manuscripts will be reviewed by at least two members of the program committee. Printed proceedings will be distributed to the participants together with electronic copies on CDROM. All accepted papers will be published electronically as Open Access by the library service of TU Dortmund University (https://www.ub.tu-dortmund.de/Eldorado/index.html). ** Important Dates Manuscript submission: 19.3.2010 Authors notification: 30.4.2010 Submission of camera-ready papers: 14.5.2010 End of early bird registration: 14.5.2010 Workshop: 22.8.2010 ** Contact, further information Thomas Ploetz, t.ploetz@ncl.ac.uk http://fahr2010.cs.tu-dortmund.de ============================================================================ ========== 2nd Call for Papers ============================================= ************************** ICFHR 2010 SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS ************************** The 12th International Conference On Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition Kolkata, INDIA November 16-18, 2010 http://www.isical.ac.in/~icfhr2010 The 12th International Conference On Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition (ICFHR 2010) sponsored by the IAPR will be organized in Kolkata, the cultural capital of India, during 16-18 Nov., 2010. ICFHR2010 at Kolkata, India. Tutorials should serve one or more of the following objectives: * Introduce students and newcomers to major topics of ICFHR research. * Provide instruction on established practices and methodologies. * Survey a mature area of ICFHR research and/or practice. * Motivate and explain an ICFHR topic of emerging importance. * Introduce expert non-specialists to an ICFHR subarea. NOTE: If you have an idea for a tutorial that does not quite fit the above objectives, please e-mail the Tutorial chairs: 1. V. Govindaraju, Univ. of Buffalo, USA (venu@cubs.buffalo.edu) 2. B. Chanda, Indian Statistical Inst., India (chanda@isical.ac.in) for a preliminary evaluation. Proposals should be of two to four pages in length, and should contain the following information: * A brief description of the tutorial, suitable for inclusion in the conference registration brochure. * A detailed outline of the tutorial, including preferred length (1/2 or 1 day). * Characterization of the potential target audience for the tutorial, including prerequisite knowledge. * A description of why the tutorial topic would be of interest to a substantial part of the ICFHR audience. * A brief resume of the presenter(s), which should include name, postal address, phone and fax numbers, e-mail address, background in the tutorial area, any available example of work in the area (ideally, a published tutorial-level article on the subject), evidence of teaching experience (including references that address the proposer's presentation skills), and evidence of scholarship in the area. * The name and e-mail address of the corresponding presenter. The corresponding presenter should be available for e-mail correspondence during the evaluation process, in the case clarifications and discussions on the scope and content of the proposal are needed. The evaluation of the proposal will take into account its general interest for ICFHR attendees (e.g., a tutorial on object-oriented inheritance will be hardly accepted), the quality of the proposal (e.g., a tutorial that simply lists a set of concepts without any apparent rationale behind them will not be approved) as well as the expertise and skills of the presenters. We emphasize that the primary criteria for evaluation will be whether a proposal is interesting, well-structured, and motivated, rather than the perceived experience/standing of the proposer. Last but not the least, the tutorial should attract a meaningful audience. Those submitting a proposal should keep in mind that tutorials are intended to provide an overview of the field; they should present reasonably well established information in a balanced way. Tutorials should not be used to advocate a single avenue of research, nor should they promote a product. All proposals should be submitted by electronic mail to the Tutorial Chairs, no later than April 30, 2010. Feedback, comments and/or suggestions would be provided within four weeks of receiving the proposal. Final acceptance (or rejection) would be decided by June 30, 2010. ============================================================================ ========== Job Opportunities =============================================== The Pattern Recognition and Document Analysis group at the Computer Vision Centre (www.cvc.uab.es), Barcelona, Spain, offers one research fellow position in the area of Document Image Analysis.
