It is a great loss to our community. Friends: I just received this sad news from Horst Bunke. In addition to his well known scientific accomplishments, we all know him as a kind and universally liked person. We shall miss him. -Kasturi ........................ Dear Exco, I have to tell you very sad news: Prof. Juergen Schuermann died on Jan 19, 2001. He died from an advanced state of cancer. He could successfully beat the first round of his illness, which started about the time when ICDAR 1999 was held - I met him afterwards and he was in good spirits and very well recovered -, but he lost the second round. Juergen was a personal friend of mine. He was very well known in the IAPR, particularly among those who work in handwriting recognition, OCR, document analysis etc. He is the recipient of the ICDAR Lifetime Award 1999. Prof. Burkhardt, president of the German Association for PR, will publish an obituary in the Newsletter of the German Association, and will prepare one to be published in the IAPR Newsletter.
